We can then move on to chakra number two. Here, the issue is no longer physical survival, though passing through the first chakra is essential to our evolution and growth, as is obviously having to pass through each other stage before moving on to the next.
Stage two is the domain where ego comes into its own, the main characteristics of ego being the absolute need to be in control, to achieve, to seek approval and be accepted and admired. The main or woman embedded in the second chakra does think of God and love Him; they seek Him albeit in fear and trembling of Him and anxious to obey and know that it is necessary to purify one's heart from pride; unclean thoughts, pomposity and wickedness in general: but alongside this, because ego is so strong in this particular domain, that the main aim in life is to get what we want when we want it. If we manage to do that, then we say that life is good. Any obstacle that prevents us from getting what we want in the way of achievements and possessions, wanting to have the best of everything and be the best at everything - get fame, fortune, artistic achievement - literary achievement and so forth, is considered 'bad': so is any advice that is not centred on I, me, or mine. Whereas people like the Buddha and Christ and all religious leaders throughout the centuries insist that the more we centre our own life on self and our egotistic needs, the more insecure we will be, but ego amazingly forges ahead trying to get more possessions, indulging its appetite for pleasure, sexual activity and various forms of sensory gratification, power and wealth, relentlessly pursuing these with an insatiable appetite - in spite of the fact that history as well as personal experience shows us over and over again, that "more" doesn't necessarily make one any happier. On the contrary, it leads us to separation from our fellow humans, because, the more you get, the less someone else has, since you are building your fortune on somebody else's loss.
On the ego level, the mind identifies itself with everything external and physical, which, as many of us have experienced, leaves one completely empty of anything valuable on the inside but this is the path that is pursued when one is in the second chakra even when we know that no matter what treasures we sample, they will never actually lead us to God - that we are trapped on the fly-paper of duality where one is constantly hovering between seeking after pleasure and trying to avoid pain. If we're looking for God, that is obviously not the place to look for him because God is beyond all opposites, and anyone who lives in the realm of duality will never be able to reach Him.
Even though sages and prophets and religious leaders throughout history have been expounding this wisdom, very few people willingly follow their advice, and even when truly convinced of the truth, they are very seldom capable of pushing the ego aside. They prefer to lead their life devoted to a very unsatisfactory set of values, concentrating outwardly on material possessions and glorification of the physical body, while neglecting their real inner spiritual needs which is tantamount to gilding the bird cage and studding it with previous jewels, while starving the bird inside, forgetting to feed it.
People in the second chakra are so bent on achieving fame and fortune and power, that they ignore this threat of complete emptiness of the heart. They are so blinded by their desires and accomplishments that the power they are seeking so avidly is quite meaningless; and that all the money and the status that goes with it do nothing to fill the colossal abyss of emptiness within. On the other hand, if and when they become aware of the emptiness within, they try to fill it up with yet more wealth, more fame, more power - and socializing and going to the theatre or other forms of entertainment to try and blot out the feeling of emptiness and futility and bewilderment they know is there.
It is at this stage that the prodigal son starts thinking about wending his way home to return to the Father because he realizes the situation he's in. The famine he's living through and the loneliness and abandonment he's undergoing makes him decide to switch to a different set of values to live by - to regain his original blissful state of being.
Now, mixed in with stage two, there is a source of great pleasure and optimism in life - sheer joy in the exploration of the world as well as conquering it, and in the countless discoveries whether scientific or otherwise - so ego has a joyride, which fact seems to boost our morale and provides us with the illusory sense of power. The tragedy and wonder is, that even though we know that giving way to ego and pandering to its every demand does definitely not lead the way to happiness, we find it almost impossible to stop ourselves from catering for the physical and psychological demands of me, myself and I.
So, to move on to the next stage or the third chakra one has to put order in one's inner life, and make the choices that are necessary for evolutionary advancement. We need to get rid of the feelings of guilt with which we have saddled ourselves - even our small misdeeds, and bring down the rigid emotional frontiers which make it hard to forgive anyone who offends us - the paradox being that such an ego-bound person cannot even love himself and finds it impossible to shake off the addictions that have been acquired on life's journey, whether it be alcohol or tobacco or over eating or sensual indulgence and such like, or the more subtle additions to certain thought patterns or fantasies and character traits that constitute an obstacle to spiritual progress. Normal experiences of pleasure can be satiated, but addictions are insatiable, so that the vicious circle continues and ego is constantly needing to love, be loved, to have or fight with or mistrust someone - always trying to be considered perfect at all costs or thriving on constant praise - Ego must have the perfect family, the perfect house, the perfect job, the perfect relationship, thereby making it impossible to live in a spontaneous, relaxed and joyful manner.
A subtler version of ego play is fanaticism, which manifests itself in persecuting and trying to eliminate anyone who does not think along the same lines as oneself or the same way. It demonstrates zero tolerance of anyone with any trace of imperfection or human frailty. The fanatic takes it upon himself to act as policeman - always ready to criticize the faults of others, whereas the compassionate love which is needed to help others on the road to liberation can only come about when ego relinquishes its grip on an individual.
These are the qualities of the second chakra as observed in Uri Geller. It must be pointed out though that in the average "normal" man, residing in the second chakra, ambition and competition take on much less attractive form. Ruthless cheating, lying, manipulating events and people for profit, and exploitation of the weak and vulnerable and taking advantage of the less informed and the na‹ve are rife and can be observed and read about in the media daily. The law courts in this and every other country in the world are kept busy and fully booked for dealing with man's inhumanity to man.
Uri seems to be just slightly tinged with the qualities of the second chakra, equipped with a healthy drive to succeed - but mercifully stripped of the more sinister aspects which seem to have many of the inhabitants of this world in its grip.
Because of his unusual paranormal feats, baffled spectators are at a loss as to how to describe him or which pigeonhole to place him in. Those of a positive turn of mind eventually concede that he is not place able in a pigeon hole and that he defies labelling and they allow themselves to acknowledge the fact that there is such a thing as an unseen spiritual power working through Uri. They look upon him with awe and wonder. Whereas, on the other hand, those with a negative frame of mind resent the manifestation of an energy that defies material classification, and that bewilderment manifests itself in trying to put him down by every means possible, usually by newspaper articles etc. trying to disprove the authenticity of his powers.
There is something very innocent and childlike in Uri. He delights in his gifts and has often uttered phrases that express wonder at where his powers come from or why he of all people possesses them. He expresses this joy and wonder when his drawings, that he executes from reading another's mind, turn out to be almost exact replicas of what the other's thoughts projected to him. He cannot hide his own astonishment and pleasure. This has given rise to a misunderstanding of his childlike quality especially in Anglo-Saxon viewpoint has been criticized as "self-admiration" or self-advertisement. But it has been said by "One who knows" that unless you possess the heart and mind of a child - you cannot enter into your interior Kingdom of Heaven".
